What is Klondike Solitaire?

When most people say “Solitaire,” they are talking about Klondike Solitaire. It is the most famous and widely played card game in the world. This specific version is Klondike Turn 1 (Draw 1), which is the most beginner-friendly and relaxing way to play. Because you draw only one card from the deck at a time, you have maximum flexibility and a much higher chance of winning compared to the harder Turn 3 variation.

How to Play Klondike (Turn 1)

Solitaire (Turn 1), commonly known as Klondike Turn 1, is the most popular and relaxing variation of classic Solitaire. In this version, you draw exactly one card from the deck at a time, making it significantly easier to plan your moves and win the game compared to the Turn 3 variant. Your ultimate objective is to transfer all 52 cards into the four foundation piles, organized by suit from Ace to King.

Understanding the Playing Area

Play Klondike Solitaire - Layout setup with stock, waste, foundations, and tableau columns

Before you make your first move, it’s essential to understand the four main sections of the board:

  • 1. The Stock (Deck): Located in the top-left corner, this pile contains the remaining cards. Clicking it reveals one card at a time.
  • 2. The Waste: Next to the stock, this is where your drawn cards face up. You can only play the top-most visible card.
  • 3. The Foundations: The four empty slots at the top-right. These are your target piles where you must build ascending sequences (Ace, 2, 3, up to King) for each suit.
  • 4. The Tableau: The main playing field consisting of seven columns. The first column has one card, the second has two, and so on. Only the top card of each column is revealed initially.

Basic Tableau Rules

Play Klondike Solitaire - Moving cards between tableau columns in descending order and alternating color

To uncover hidden cards in the tableau, you must move face-up cards between columns. The golden rule of Solitaire is that you can only place a card on top of another if it is one rank lower and of the opposite color.

For example, if you have a black 10 (like the 10 of Spades or Clubs), you can successfully drop it onto a red Jack (Hearts or Diamonds). You can drag single cards or entire stacks of properly sequenced cards to new columns. If an entire column is emptied, that blank space can only be filled by a King!

Building the Foundations

Play Klondike Solitaire - Building cards into foundation piles starting from Ace to King

The foundation piles are the key to victory. Every foundation must begin with an Ace. Once an Ace is placed in a foundation slot, you can move the corresponding 2 of the same suit onto it, followed by the 3, and so forth.

Whenever a card on your tableau or waste pile is ready for the foundation, simply drag it up there. Don’t worry if you need it back later—Turn 1 rules allow you to pull a card from the foundation back down to the tableau if it helps you unblock a crucial hidden card!

Winning Strategies for Beginners

Even though Turn 1 is forgiving, you still need a solid strategy to win consistently:

  • Flip Face-Down Cards: This is your absolute highest priority. Every move you make should be evaluated on whether it helps uncover a face-down card. The cards hidden in the tableau are your biggest obstacle.
  • Don’t Empty a Column Without a King: An empty column is useless unless you have a King ready to move into it. If moving a card creates an empty column, but you don’t have a King, it might be better to leave that card where it is for now.
  • Play from the Tableau First: If you have a choice between moving a Black 5 from the waste pile or a Black 5 from the tableau, always choose the one from the tableau. The waste pile is safe; the tableau contains cards you need to uncover.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Turn 1 and Turn 3?

In Turn 1 (Draw 1), you flip one card from the stock pile at a time, so you have access to every card in the deck easily. In Turn 3 (Draw 3), you flip three cards at a time, but you can only play the top card of those three. Turn 1 is significantly easier and more relaxing.

Is every game of Klondike Turn 1 winnable?

No, but the odds are much better than Turn 3. With perfect play and the ability to look ahead, it is estimated that about 80% of Klondike Turn 1 games are winnable.

What goes in an empty column?

Only a King (or a stack of cards starting with a King at the bottom) can be placed into an empty tableau column. No other card is allowed.

What is the history and origin of Klondike Solitaire?

Klondike Solitaire is named after the Klondike region of Yukon, Canada. It gained massive popularity during the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 19th century, where prospectors played it to pass the time. It is also known simply as Patience or Classic Solitaire.

What other games are in the Klondike solitaire family?
