How to Play Diamond Solitaire
The objective of Diamond Solitaire is simple: clear all the cards in the diamond layout by matching them sequentially with the card on the waste pile. You win by clearing the board before your stock pile runs dry.
Understanding the Playing Area
The board layout of Diamond Solitaire features a single, massive diamond formation. As shown in the layout screenshot, the bottom-most rows of cards start face-up, while the overlapping cards in the layers above remain face-down until they are uncovered.
To master the diamond layout, familiarize yourself with its structure:
- The Diamond: The main board where cards are dealt face-down in a diamond shape. The layout starts narrow, widens in the center, and narrows again at the bottom. Only the bottom-most cards are dealt face-up and are available for matching.
- The Stock Pile: The deck at the bottom left containing the reserve cards. You will draw from here when you run out of moves on the board.
- The Waste Pile: The active pile at the bottom right. The top card is face-up and serves as the card you must match.
Making Matches & Card Sequences
Clearing the diamond relies on making sequential matches. As shown in the move illustration, you can select any uncovered face-up card from the diamond and transfer it to the waste pile if its value is exactly one rank higher or lower than the waste pile’s top card.
Clearing the diamond relies entirely on the rank of the cards:
- One Higher or One Lower: You can select any face-up card from the diamond and move it to the waste pile if it is exactly one rank higher or one rank lower than the current top card on the waste pile.
- Ignore Suits and Colors: A 7 of Hearts can go on an 8 of Clubs, or a Queen of Spades can go on a Jack of Diamonds. Only the rank matters.
- Wrapping Sequences: The ranks wrap around. You can play a King on an Ace, or an Ace on a King, allowing you to sustain long sequence chains. For example: 3 → 2 → Ace → King → Queen → Jack → 10.
Drawing from the Stock
When you can no longer find any valid matches on the diamond layout, click the stock pile to draw. As shown in the stock draw illustration, clicking the stock deals a new card face-up onto the waste pile, giving you a new starting point to build sequences.
- Dealing a New Card: If you cannot find a matching card in the diamond, click the stock pile to flip a new card onto the waste pile, giving you a new starting point.
- Uncovering Overlaps: Face-down cards in the diamond flip face-up automatically as soon as the cards overlapping them from below are cleared.
