What is FreeCell Solitaire?
FreeCell Solitaire (commonly known as Free Cell Patience) is a highly strategic, open-information card game where almost every single deal is winnable. Unlike classic Klondike, where hidden cards and a stock pile rely heavily on luck, in FreeCell, all 52 cards are dealt face up from the very beginning. Your success depends entirely on logic, planning, and your ability to utilise the four “Free Cells” to manoeuvre cards around the board.

How to Play FreeCell Solitaire
The Setup
The game uses a standard 52-card deck. The layout consists of three specific areas:
- The Tableau: Eight columns of cards. All cards are dealt face up. The first four columns contain 7 cards, and the last four contain 6 cards.
- The Free Cells: Four empty slots in the top left corner. These are temporary holding spots for any single card.
- The Foundations: Four empty piles in the top right. You must build your suits here from Ace to King.
At the start of each game, all 52 cards are distributed face up across the eight columns. Because all cards are visible from the beginning, there are no hidden elements. This allows you to inspect the entire board and plan your strategy before making a single move. You can see the location of every Ace, King, and key sequence, making the game a pure puzzle of skill.
The Rules
Moving cards in FreeCell is governed by a strict mathematical rule based on empty spaces:
- Tableau Building: You can place a card onto another card in the tableau only if it is one rank lower and of the opposite colour (e.g., a Red 9 on a Black 10).
When rearranging cards in the columns, you must build descending sequences in alternating colours. For example, as shown in the gameplay, you can drop a Red Jack onto a Black Queen. You can move single cards to other columns, empty Free Cells, or the foundations.

Moving Sequences (The Catch): In theory, you can only move one card at a time. However, the game automatically allows you to move an entire properly ordered sequence if and only if you have enough empty Free Cells and/or empty Tableau columns to move the cards individually. The formula for the maximum cards you can move is:
(Empty Free Cells + 1) * (2 ^ Empty Tableau columns). -
Using Free Cells: You can place any single card into an empty Free Cell. You can move it back to the tableau or to a foundation later.
- Building the Foundations: The four empty slots in the top right serve as the final destination for all cards. You must build each suit (Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs, Spades) in ascending order, starting with the Ace, followed by the 2, 3, 4, and ending with the King. Double-clicking any card will automatically send it to the foundations if a valid slot is open.
