How to Play Golf Solitaire
The rules of classic Golf Solitaire are simple and intuitive, making it a favorite for casual players. The ultimate objective is to move all 35 cards dealt into the tableau onto the waste pile before the stock pile is depleted.
Understanding the Playing Area
The Golf Solitaire board layout is clean and open-information. As shown in the layout image, all 35 cards in the tableau are dealt face-up, making every card visible. The remaining 17 cards form the stock pile at the bottom left, while the waste pile starts with a single face-up card to begin your matching sequences.
To clear the board efficiently, familiarize yourself with the three main zones:
- The Tableau: Exactly 35 cards are dealt face-up into 7 columns, with 5 cards per column. Although they overlap slightly, every card is visible. However, you can only play the completely exposed card at the bottom of each column.
- The Stock Pile: Located at the bottom left, this pile holds the remaining 17 reserve cards. When you run out of moves, you draw from here.
- The Waste Pile: Next to the stock, this is where you build your card sequences. The top card is face-up and serves as the value you must match.
Making Matches & The Sequence Rule
In Golf Solitaire, matching is strictly sequential. As shown in the move illustration, you can clear any exposed card from the bottom of any tableau column to the waste pile if it is exactly one rank higher or one rank lower than the top card of the waste pile. For example, a 4 can be matched with a 3 or a 5.
Clearing the columns relies strictly on sequential matching:
- One Higher or One Lower: You can click any exposed card at the bottom of a column and move it to the waste pile if its rank is exactly one rank higher or one rank lower than the current top card of the waste pile.
- Suits Are Ignored: You can place a red 4 on a black 5, or a Club on a Diamond. Only the numerical value matters.
- The Classic King Barrier: In traditional Golf Solitaire rules, wrapping around is not allowed. Sequences end at Kings. A King is a “stopper”—no card (including Aces or Queens) can be placed on top of it. Likewise, an Ace can only be matched with a 2, and cannot receive a King.
Drawing from the Stock
When you run out of moves, click the stock pile to draw a new card. This action flips a card from the stock directly onto the waste pile, immediately changing the active matching value. You only get one pass through the stock, so choose your moves carefully.
- Flip a New Card: Clicking the stock pile deals a new card onto the waste pile, providing a new value to match. You only get one pass through the stock pile—no redeals are permitted.
- Freeing Buried Cards: Removing the bottom card of a column immediately exposes the card above it, making it face-up and playable.
